Coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo was discharged from hospital this Sunday after undergoing treatment for a lung infection. On Friday (20), the 73-year-old coach was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) from Hospital Santa Thereza, in Palmas, capital of Tocantins.
O coach showed good humor in a video published on social media upon leaving the hospital. “I’m like a quince stick, it bends, but it doesn’t break. We get a little bent, but in a little while we’ll straighten it out again. I’ve just been discharged, everything’s great, everything’s wonderful. Staying in the hospital, in the ICU, is complicated,” he said.
The coach also explained the treatment he underwent in the hospital and the next steps until full recovery. “The bacteria I caught catches 40% of the population. Unfortunately, I was caught by her. When I arrived from Brasília I was very ill, with chills, the next day I continued and came to the hospital. I underwent intensive treatment to combat the bacteria, it fought, it stabilized, I will continue the treatment at home, moderate it at work so as not to be exposed.”
O professional has been away from football since 2023, when he led Corinthians. On Thursday (18), Luxemburgo was made official by Podemos as a pre-candidate for the Federal Senate for Tocantins. In 2022, he tried to run for the same seat for the PSB, but ended up being passed over by the party.
One of the most successful coaches in the history of Brazilian football, Luxembourg has accumulated several Brazilian Championship titles for clubs such as Palmeiras, Corinthians, Santos and Cruzeiro, a team with which he also won the Copa do Brasil. With the Brazilian national team, he won the 1999 Copa América and also has a stint as coach at Real Madrid.
