- The International Committee of the Red Cross has called for an end to attacks on infrastructure.
- According to him, the ongoing fighting in the Middle East threatens with irreversible consequences.
- Deliberate attacks on essential services and civilian infrastructure can be war crimes.
“The war against basic infrastructure is a war against civilians. It must end. Every effort to ease tensions is crucial,” declared ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaričová. She warned that deliberate attacks on essential services and civilian infrastructure could constitute war crimes. At the same time, she called for an end to the war before the conflict reaches a point “from which there will be no return.”
Threat to nuclear facilities
She called possible damage to nuclear facilities the most alarming. “Damage to these places could have irreversible consequences, which is why stricter protective measures apply to them according to the rules of the law of war,” she added.
Spoljaričová already warned three weeks ago, immediately after the start of the fighting between the USA, Israel and Iran, that the war in the Middle East puts civilians in serious danger.
