Donald Trump surprised the world with the announcement of negotiations between the United States and Iran, which postponed for five days the ultimatum given to Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The North American President already has a history of inconsequential ultimatums.
In the campaign that preceded the inaugural speech and the Donald Trump established a series of objectives regarding the domestic and foreign policy of the United States.
Making America great again was the main thing, but there were also promises with defined goals and deadlines, such as ending the war in Ukraine in one day, that is, in 24 hours.
Threat to Putin
Six months after taking office, he gave Vladimir Putin his first ultimatum, demanding a ceasefire agreement within 50 days or, in retaliation, the imposition of 100% customs duties on Moscow and its trading partners.
The ultimatum would later be reduced to 10 or 12 days. The date, however, expired without consequences, nor ceasefire.
Maduro ‘suffered’
The president of the United States also resorted to the weapon of ultimatum in Venezuela, when, in November 2025, in a telephone conversation, he demanded that Nicolás Maduro leave the presidency and the country.
Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cília Flores, ended up being kidnapped on January 3 by United States special forces and taken to New York, where they are detained awaiting trial.
And Greenland…
Two weeks after the attack on Venezuela, Donald Trump threatened Denmark and seven other European countries, allies of the United States, with heavy additional customs duties if the purchase of Greenland by the United States was not closed by June 1, 2026.
Donald Trump would eventually back down, but the ultimatum cut to the heart of NATO.
