The former first lady celebrated this Tuesday (24) the decision of the minister, of the (Federal Supreme Court), to grant humanitarian house arrest to the former president ().
“Thank you, my God!”, wrote the president of PL Mulher in a post on social media when sharing the news, without mentioning Moraes directly.
The Supreme Court minister authorized the transfer of Bolsonaro da Papudinha one day after the former first lady during a meeting in her office, at the court headquarters.
In another post, Michelle Bolsonaro shared a photo from April 15 last year in which she massages the former president’s feet, who, at the time, was hospitalized to recover from abdominal surgery.
She also stated that she will continue to take care of her husband. Currently, the former president has bacterial bronchopneumonia in both lungs and is not expected to be discharged.
“Yes, I CELEBRATE the small victories. I don’t dwell on the details of the process. I am a wife and mother, and I cried out to God a lot to help us, so that he could go home and receive the necessary care. Tomorrow belongs to God. Justice and judgment are in His hands”, said Michelle.
“Before any reaction, let’s remember: he is the one who is far from home, far from his minor daughter and far from his own home,” he added, referring to the couple’s daughter, Laura.
Bolsonaro’s main political godson, the governor of , (Republicans), also celebrated house arrest. According to him, “nothing is fairer” than ensuring that the former president “has guaranteed the right to humane treatment in an environment suitable for his recovery.”
“Happy to know that President Jair Bolsonaro will finally be able to return home, where he will have the opportunity to continue his treatment surrounded by the care and affection of his family […] We continue to pray for your health and are confident that better days will come,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
The former federal deputy (PL-SP) stated that the decision “has no legal basis, but rather a political one” and said that Moraes fears that the former president will die in custody, which would “further expose the already worn-out image” of the court.
Senator and pre-candidate for President, Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) said that the fight now is “to do justice and prove Bolsonaro’s innocence”.
The federal deputy (PL-MG) called the measure “a breather” for Bolsonaro’s “freedom”, and the president of the PL, Valdemar Costa Neto, stated that the former president “will be able to receive the care he so desperately needs”.
Michelle and Tarcísio were part of the offensive by the former president’s allies to pressure Moraes to grant house arrest. The pre-candidate for the Presidency (PL-RJ), the Bolsonaro bench and ministers from the STF also participated.
An argument used by politicians and other ministers alongside Moraes was the risk that Bolsonaro’s eventual death would be seen politically as the responsibility of the Supreme Court. Given this, at least five court magistrates understood that letting Bolsonaro serve his sentence at home would in fact be the best option.
This Monday, Moraes decided that Jair Bolsonaro will be able to serve at home, in a condominium in Brasília, for an initial period of 90 days. The former president will have to wear an electronic ankle bracelet and will be prohibited from using social media or recording audio or videos.
Despite the celebration, Bolsonaro’s allies also criticized measures imposed by Moraes in his decision.
Blogger Paulo Figueiredo, one of those accused of attempted coup d’état, stated that the decision aims to “guarantee that Jair remains a hostage and that any attempt at impeachment by the Bolsonarists (and Flávio) could throw his father back to prison as soon as the deadline ends” and prevent the former president’s political articulation.
The request for house arrest from the sentence for attempted coup d’état. The sentence of 27 years and three months in prison, imposed by the First Panel of the STF, began to be served last November, initially in the PF (Federal Police) superintendence in Brasília and later in Papudinha.
According to Moraes’ order, the 90-day period will start counting from his medical discharge, “for the purpose of full recovery from bronchopneumonia”. After the three months have elapsed, “the presence of the necessary requirements for maintaining humanitarian house arrest will be re-analyzed, including medical expertise if necessary.”
