Planting cucumbers for transplants. How to do it right?

Cucumbers, next to tomatoes, are the most frequently chosen vegetables (botanical fruits) for self-cultivation. Unlike tomatoes, however, growing cucumbers is more difficult and the seedlings themselves are more capricious. Cucumbers are thermophilic, so they are planted a little later than tomatoes. Gardeners indicate that the best time for sowing cucumbers for seedlings is the second half of April. Cucumbers do not tolerate temperature fluctuations well. According to experts, the temperature range during the day and night should not exceed 5 degrees Celsius. Freshly planted seedlings need about one month to be transferred to the ground.

It’s not complicated to set up. It is important that cucumbers are planted in separate pots with a minimum diameter of about 10 centimeters. Unlike tomatoes, cucumber seedlings should not be replanted, which is why you choose larger containers. It is also not recommended to plant them in small multi-chamber pots. Pots for planting cucumbers should have holes in the bottom to regulate excess water. The soil for cucumbers should be properly prepared. You can buy ready-made mixtures in gardening stores or prepare it yourself. A mixture of deacidified peat, garden soil and sand will work best. Some people also recommend heating the soil in the oven to get rid of potential pathogens and fungi.

Before putting them in, they should be soaked in water at room temperature for a few hours. This treatment will help the seeds germinate better. Place two seeds in each pot to a depth of about 2 centimeters. If both seeds sprout, remove the weaker ones. Cucumbers should be placed in a well-sunny position. Maybe it would be a sunny windowsill, but watch out for potential drafts. Freshly planted seeds should be watered regularly to keep the soil constantly moist. However, it is important that water does not stand in the pots. This can lead to root rot. Hardening off seedlings is also an important care procedure. About 10 days before planting cucumbers in the ground, it is worth taking them outside for a few hours. Thanks to this, the plants will better tolerate being transplanted into the ground in the garden.

Fertilizing cucumbers with milk

with milk is one of the oldest and most popular methods. My grandfather used to eat it, and his cucumbers always tasted delicious. Milk will provide seedlings with calcium and other ingredients that directly affect the quantity and quality of crops. Additionally, milk is an effective barrier against fungal diseases and insect attacks. You can use milk to fertilize cucumbers in two ways – water the seedlings near the ground or use it as a spray. To prepare cucumber conditioner, simply mix skim milk with water in the proportions of 1:10, i.e. 1 liter of milk per 10 liters of water. Just mix everything thoroughly and it’s ready. During the season, I water the cucumbers with milk nutrient once a month.
