The Judiciary Police (PJ) announced this Wednesday the arrest of a 33-year-old man suspected of having set fire to an outbuilding of a house in the municipality of Pombal, district of Leiria, in the early hours of Tuesday.

In a statement, the said that, through the Center’s Directorate and with the collaboration of the Republican National Guard (GNR), he arrested the alleged perpetrator of the crime of urban fire that caused “significant damage to an outbuilding of a house”, in the town of Granja.

“The fire was caused with the use of gasoline as an accelerating material and with the use of matches”, said the PJ, who explained that the origin of the crime could be a “family disagreement between the residents of that house”.

According to the PJ, “the fire, in addition to the damage caused, endangered not only high-value assets of others, but also the life and physical integrity of third partieswhich did not happen due to the quick and decisive intervention of the firefighters”.

The accused will be presented for the first judicial interrogation for possible application of coercive measures.

In the early hours of Tuesday, three people were left homeless following a fire in housing where they lived, which was destroyed, a source from the Sub-Regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command of the Leiria Region told the Lusa agency.

“The three people were not injured, but were left homeless following the fire in the house, and are being monitored by the competent authorities,” said the same source.

GNR source added that in the house, in addition to the detainee, there lived a 85 year old woman and a 35 year old man.
