Kassab says PSD will define candidate by next week – 03/24/2026 – Politics

National president of , declared this Tuesday (24) that by the end of March the party will define which governor will be its candidate for President of the Republic: whether it will be (RS) or (GO).

The statement was made in the early afternoon, during the affiliation event of presenter Silvia Abravanel, from , at the party headquarters, in the center of the capital of São Paulo. She will run for a seat in the Chamber of Deputies for the PSD. Before the event, Kassab hosted a coffee at his home, in Jardim Paulistano, west of the city.

“He only expressed his willingness, his motivation to be a candidate, which is very good”, declared the president of the PSD.

This Monday (23), the governor of Paraná, in running for President. Until now, he was identified internally as the favorite to run for the position.

Kassab said there was no surprise in the gesture and that the decision was taken “for family reasons, local political issues”. The announcement was made after PL, the former president’s party, announced support for senator Sergio Moro’s candidacy for state government, leaving Ratinho’s succession threatened in Paraná.

This Wednesday (25), Kassab will also meet with Eduardo Leite to discuss his interest in being the party’s presidential candidate and that the decision will be announced soon.

“Possibly by the end of the month. Possible even before,” said Kassab.

Because Caiado and Leite are governors, they both have until April 4th, the Electoral Court deadline to leave their respective positions if they want to run for President.

The party president avoided talking about conversations for the vice president and said that there had not yet been negotiations with other parties. “I worked a lot in Brazil to put an end to proportional coalitions and I have also been working to put an end to majority coalitions. Because coalitions are a jabuticaba of Brazilian politics. I find it strange that a party only exists at election time to support another party.”

“So our focus is internal. After defining the candidate, we will evaluate the circumstances, the other candidates, to define the best vice profile,” he added.

Kassab, who is Secretary of Government for the administration (Republicans) in São Paulo, did not comment on the possibility that vice-governor Felício Ramuth could leave the PSD for another party to run for re-election and said that the definition will be made “without stress”.

“Regarding the possible departure of members, this will be discussed after April 4 [fim da janela partidária]. The important thing is the support for Governor Tarcísio, who has been an excellent governor. It’s a privilege for São Paulo to have him for another four years.”

Asked about the decision of the minister, of the (Supreme Federal Court), to grant house arrest to Jair Bolsonaro, Kassab said he was happy.

“I’m very happy. He was in serious trouble, and I think it was a very appropriate decision. I compliment the Federal Supreme Court. I myself was advocating for this to happen as quickly as possible.”
