Mercadona announced the opening of three new supermarkets in Portugal later this year, in the locations of Alhos Vedros, Vila Real and Beja, and has already started recruiting for these new stores. The company seeks supermarket operators and guarantees a permanent contract, in addition to paid training from day one.
According to the Spanish chain, cited by , the new supermarket in Alhos Vedros, in the municipality of Moita, is scheduled to open in August.
In Vila Real, Mercadona is preparing its debut in the district with the first store scheduled for September.
Beja will also receive the brand’s first supermarket in the district this year, also scheduled to open in September.
Company is already hiring
For these three stores, Mercadona has opened vacancies for supermarket operator positions, with different types of working hours.
One of the available options is 20 hours a week, in five-day shifts with fixed shifts. In these cases, the annual gross remuneration starts at 7,646 euros and can increase up to 10,457 euros, in addition to food allowance, Sundays and holidays.
There are also vacancies for 15 hours a week, with work on Saturdays and Sundays. Gross annual remuneration starts at 5,734 euros and can reach 7,843 euros, also with additional allowances.
The company highlights that all of these offers include an effective employment contract and a paid training period from day one.
Training is paid and without travel outside the region
According to Mercadona, during training all expenses are covered by the company, including food and transport.
The brand also says that it will not be necessary to travel outside of the candidates’ region of residence, which can make these vacancies more attractive for those looking for a job close to home.
Expansion continues in Portugal
Mercadona currently has 70 stores in Portugal, after having already opened a new supermarket this year.
The company recently revealed that it intends to open 12 new supermarkets in the country throughout 2026, expanding to four new districts.
Among the districts where the badge will debut this year are Castelo Branco, Beja, Vila Real and Faro.
Profits grew in 2025
The Spanish chain closed 2025 with profits of 26 million euros in Portugal, more than tripling the previous year’s result.
Sales rose 18% in the Portuguese market, totaling 2,092 million euros, at a time when the company also reinforced its operations in the country.
Last year, Mercadona created 500 new jobs in Portugal and now has 7,500 workers in the national market.
In addition to the stores, the company has two logistics centers in the country and estimates investing 150 million euros in Portugal throughout this year.
