World Water Day, celebrated on March 22, gained an innovative and social approach in schools in Rio Branco. Last Monday (23), an educational lecture was held at the São José Institute, bringing the topic to the center of the debate “Where water flows, equality grows – Amazon for them”.
The initiative is part of an intense awareness program that takes place between the 23rd and 26th of March, joining forces between the State Government, through the Environment Secretariat (Sema), and the City Hall, via the Municipal Environment Secretariat (Semeia), in addition to a vast network of partner institutions. The objective is to transform students into multipliers of sustainable practices and agents of change in their communities.
The Impact of Gender on the Water Crisis
During the activity, students were led to reflect on the use of water beyond basic consumption. The lecture revealed an alarming fact: around the world, women and girls spend around 250 million hours a day searching for water, a task that takes them away from classrooms and the job market. In the Amazon context, this reality reinforces that the preservation of water sources is also a tool for promoting equality.
“Water is essential for life on the planet, and the gender analysis shows that women are the most affected by scarcity”, highlighted the IMC technical team. The proposal is that, by understanding this inequality, young people begin to value the resource more consciously, recognizing that water preservation is a pillar for a fairer society.
Institutional Network and Closing
The action has the support of several bodies, such as Imac, Saneacre, Saerb, Fire Department, Ibama and ICMBio, demonstrating the union of public spheres in favor of the environment. More than a theoretical class, the lecture encouraged students to seek solutions for their daily lives, based on the premise that changing individual habits directly impacts the environmental balance of the region.
