Without approval for extension, CPMI rapporteur plans to read opinion on Friday (27)

The INSS CPMI rapporteur, deputy Alfredo Gaspar (PL-AL), announced this Thursday (26) that, if the commission is not extended, he will read the final report on Friday (27). The presentation of the opinion will depend on the decision of the STF (Supreme Federal Court), which will judge the possibility of extension this afternoon.

“If the trial ends today saying that there will be no elasticity in the deadline, I will have the obligation tomorrow [sexta-feira] read the report”, said the rapporteur to journalists in the Senate.

The deadline for the commission of inquiry is Sunday (28). The CPMI leadership, however, presented a writ of mandamus to the Supreme Court to request the continuation of the work. On Monday (23), Minister André Mendonça, from the STF, gave approval for the extension for up to 120 days – the decision will now be analyzed in the plenary.

For Alfredo Gaspar, the CPMI has the “assumptions for the extension”. In recent days, members of the collegiate have articulated an understanding about the deadline for the activities, if approved by the STF.

As CNN showed, opposition parliamentarians and the president of CPMI, Carlos Viana (Podemos-MG), aim to extend the work for at least another 30 days. On another front, parliamentarians from the government base also articulated a request for a 15-day extension.

Report under construction

Alfredo Gaspar’s opinion should call for the indictment of more than 200 people. The document already has more than 5,000 pages, according to the rapporteur. He argues that, despite there being no legal support, the report should be analyzed as a whole in relation to what there is consensus and a separate vote on sections in which there is disagreement.

“I read the report and the points of divergence are highlighted and voted on, but there is no legal certainty for this path. There is still no decision that says this path can be implemented”, he commented.

If the panel is extended, the rapporteur states that it is necessary for the commission to advance in investigations in relation to the financial system.
