The senator avoided mentioning the PCC and the Red Command and said that, with Lula, Brazil is experiencing a “public security crisis with a huge expansion of cartels”; A report from the New York Times says that the senator and his brother, Eduardo, worked with US authorities to push for the factions to be classified as terrorist groups
The senator and pre-candidate for President (PL-RJ) said this Saturday (28.mar.2026) that the president made one “forte lobby” with advisors from the United States government to “prevent the 2 largest drug cartels in Brazil from being classified as terrorist organizations”. The statement was made during his 16-minute speech at the Cpac (Conservative Political Action Conference), the main event of the American right, held in Texas.
The congressman made reference to one (in English, for subscribers) from the newspaper New York Times published on Friday (27.mar.2026) with the title “United States may classify Brazilian gangs as terrorist groups, after pressure from Bolsonaros”. The text deals with the assessment that the North American government makes to classify the PCC and the Red Command as terrorist organizations. Flávio did not name the factions.
Flávio stated: “According to a New York Times article […], The president of my country lobbies America to protect terrorist organizations that oppress my people, launder money, and export drugs and weapons to the United States and the world.”. The report, in fact, says that Flávio and his brother, former deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP), worked with authorities from the Donald Trump government (Republican Party) to have the two factions classified as terrorists.
Throughout the text, it is said that the Brazilian government follows the discussion with concern for a number of reasons. He considers that the designation may represent interference by the North American government in the Brazilian electoral process when taking a decision that could benefit Flávio’s campaign for Planalto. The government also assesses that the classification of the factions as terrorists could open space for US military actions in Brazilian territory and for economic sanctions against Brazilian companies that could be accused of links with the 2 groups.
Also regarding Lula, the senator said that the current Brazilian administration is “openly anti-American” and stated that the PT member speaks publicly about undermining the dollar as a global currency.
He said that with Lula’s return to the Presidency, the “Brazil is experiencing another devastating economic crisis, a public security crisis with the enormous expansion of narco-terrorist cartels, and multiple corruption scandals involving even members of Lula’s own family”.
