Slovakia is going through a turbulent period on the fuel market. The combination of the declared state of oil emergency and significantly lower prices compared to neighboring countries pushed the government to take radical steps, while statistics confirm the highest fuel prices in recent months to years.

Prime Minister Robert Fico announced on Wednesday, March 18, the adoption of a government regulation which introduced strict restrictions on the diesel market. The main reason was the state of oil emergency and the critical lack of fuel in the north of Slovakia, where Polish drivers were massively depleting gas station supplies due to more favorable prices.

The government limited the volume of refueling for a period of 30 days and banned the export of diesel from the Slovak Republic. The most fundamental innovation was the introduction of a special price for vehicles registered abroad, which depended on the average prices in Austria, the Czech Republic and Poland. Exceptions to the restrictions applied only to emergency services, the police and the army.

Data from the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic for the 11th week confirmed an unfavorable trend. The prices of both gasoline and diesel jumped over the 1.50 euro per liter mark, which represented several-month highs. During the week, fuel prices rose by an average of 4 cents, thus exceeding the price level of the previous year.

The latest March data from the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic confirmed that that diesel fuel continued to grow above average. Its price reached its highest level since March 2024. While gasoline prices rose only slightly, ordinary diesel rose by another 4 cents to an average of 1.573 euros per liter. In a year-on-year comparison, diesel was more expensive by more than 6%. In the second half of March, gas fuels such as CNG and LNG also began to be visibly auctioned.

One of the most successful Slovak businesswomen, Zuzana Strausz Plačková, also noticed the rocket increase in prices. The influencer, who is followed by more than 916,000 people on the social network, took a picture of a totem pole with information about the price of fuel at a gas station. “Extreme ten diesel,” she was holding her head. The price for a liter of diesel was 1.999 euros, while for gasoline 1.609 euros. PHOTO can be found in the gallery.
