This is one of the beaches “with the most notoriety in Portugal and the world” and its waters can be free from contamination after this work

British people discover new seaside destination in Portugal that they say is “cheaper than the Algarve”

Praia da Nazaré, one of the best known in Portugal and with international projection, is undergoing an intervention in the sanitation system with the aim of preventing new episodes of water contamination, following the problems recorded during the summer of 2025. The work aims to guarantee safe conditions for bathers and reinforce confidence in the destination.

According to the news agency, the intervention focuses on replacing a sanitation pipe that is over 60 years old, located in the northern part of the village, whose degradation was the cause of several pollution incidents.

According to the same source, in August 2025 there were pollutant discharges into the sea, caused by an obstruction in the sanitation network near Praça Manuel de Arriaga. These incidents led to the beach being closed for swimming at three different times, affecting the swimming season and generating concern among residents and visitors.

Impact on health and tourism

Following these episodes, 116 people were treated at the Local Health Unit in the Leiria Region with symptoms associated with water contamination. According to the same source, the situation had a direct impact on the perception of beach safety, a factor considered decisive for a destination with strong tourist exposure.

The same source mentions that replacing the pipes was considered urgent, given the need to prevent new similar episodes. The person responsible for Nazaré Municipal Services explained that the work aims to ensure that “those situations that happened in 2025 do not happen again in Praia da Nazaré”.

How is the work

The work is being carried out by the municipal services themselves, due to the technical complexity and sensitivity of the intervention, which involves several infrastructures. A significant part of the intervention has already been carried out in the Praça Manuel de Arriaga area, and now work is advancing to other areas.

The news agency adds that the work suffered temporary interruptions due to weather conditions, namely rain, and should be resumed with the progression of the pipes along the wall. The final phase of the intervention, in the beach area, still depends on authorization from the Portuguese Environment Agency, the entity responsible for managing the coast.

Deadline and expected investment

The objective is to complete the entire project by mid-May, before the start of the next bathing season. The estimated investment is between 250,000 and 300,000 euros, being supported by Nazaré Municipal Services with its own resources.

According to Lusa, one of the main objectives of the intervention is to restore confidence in the environmental quality of the beach, considered strategic for the region. The person responsible highlighted that, being “one of the most famous beaches in Portugal and in the world”, there is an increased responsibility to prevent situations that could pose an environmental risk.
