Palmeiras left-back Piquerez will need to undergo surgery in the coming days, after tests carried out on Sunday (29) confirmed that the player suffered a tear in right ankle ligaments. The information was released by the São Paulo club this Monday (30).
The injury happened on Friday (27), while the athlete was playing for the Uruguay team in a friendly against England, at Wembley.
Palmeiras informed that the entire process will be carried out in Health and Performance Center (NSP) of the club, also counting on the monitoring of the Uruguayan Football Association medical team (ON).
Piquerez left the match between England and Uruguay at 16 minutes of play. The Palmeiras full-back left the field crying and on a stretcher after a tackle. He cut Madueke’s cross, but the attacker fell on the Uruguayan’s right legwhich turned his ankle. Piquerez immediately fell down in pain and was unable to get up. The game ended in a 1-1 draw.
Start of treatment
Piquerez was evaluated by Palmeiras on Sunday and, shortly after, began treatment. The day also marked Abel Ferreira’s return to the Football Academy, in Barra Funda, after a trip to see his family in Portugal.
In addition to the defender, coach Abel Ferreira couldn’t count on center forward Vitor Roquewho is recovering from an ankle injury suffered during the classic against São Paulo, in the semi-final of the Campeonato Paulista. Shirt 9 worked inside the Football Academy.
The available players performed technical training e tactical in Barra Funda, in addition to specific defense movements e attack.
Palmeiras returns to the pitch next Thursday (02), at 9:30 pm, at Arena Barueri, for a duel against Grêmio, in the 9th round of the Brazilian Championship. The team is trying to maintain its good form and guarantee its advantage at the top of the national competition, in addition to achieving its fourth consecutive victory in the tournament.
