It was a long journey from Russia via Hungary to Ukraine for Maximilian Andronnikov. But the way back is much longer. “Caesar,” his nom de guerre, has been fighting in Ukraine for almost four years now. “Every person is responsible for their actions,” he says. And his responsibility is to protect this country, Ukraine, from this “crazy state”, he means his homeland Russia. He is not fighting against Russia, he is fighting against the Russian regime. He is not a traitor. Quite the opposite. This regime is the traitor. This regime sent more than a million people senselessly to death for a bit of land. And something else is clear, as he says: “This regime came to power through terror, this regime will not leave peacefully.” And that’s why he’s in Ukraine, where the massacre by Russian troops in the Kyiv suburb of Bucha is being commemorated for the fourth time on Tuesday.
