Moraes schedules interrogation of Eduardo Bolsonaro for April 14

Former deputy is being investigated for trying to interfere in the trial of the coup plot that sentenced his father, former president Jair Bolsonaro, to 27 years and three months in prison

Eduardo had his mandate in the Chamber of Deputies revoked due to absences and is also facing an administrative process at the Federal Police.

O minister Alexandre de Moraes, do Supremo Tribunal Federal (STF), scheduled the interrogation of the former deputy for April 14 Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-RJ). The testimony will be held via videoconference.

Edward is investigated in a criminal case in the Supreme Court for trying to interfere in his father’s trialthe former president Jair Bolsonaroconvicted of attempted coup d’état. According to the accusation, he had acted outside the country to influence the progress of the process.

According to the Attorney General’s Office (PGR)the parliamentarian was denounced for coercion during the processa crime that consists of using threat or pressure to interfere in a legal action and favor one’s own interests or those of third parties. The expected penalty is one to four years in prison.

Since March, Eduardo has lived in the United States, where he holds meetings with US government authorities to request action against Brazil and Supreme Court ministers. Among the developments are the imposition of 50% tariffs on Brazilian products and the suspension of visas for authorities.

When analyzing the case, Alexandre de Moraes agreed with the PGR and stated that Eduardo Bolsonaro’s actions were “aimed at creation of an institutional and social environment of instabilitywith the application of increasing sanctions on Brazilian authorities and economic losses to Brazil”, with the purpose of benefiting Jair Bolsonaro. The minister also highlighted that the strategy was “abundantly” registered on the investigated person’s social networks.

The former deputy has not returned to Brazil since leaving the country. Due to absence, had his mandate in the Chamber of Deputies revoked for faults. Eduardo is also responding to an administrative proceeding at the Federal Police (PF), which is investigating the abandonment of his position as clerk at the corporation’s police station in Angra dos Reis (RJ) due to absence from work and unjustified absences.

Last year, the First Panel of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) condemned the former president Jair Bolsonaro to 27 years and three months in closed prison.

The conviction took place on September 11th. By 4 votes to 1the First Panel convicted the seven defendants for the crimes of: Armed criminal organization, Attempted violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law, Coup d’état, Damage qualified by violence and serious threat and Deterioration of listed property.
