The lack of labor in the restaurant sector returned to the center of the debate, this time with statements by chef Rui Paula during an interview with RTP. The person responsible for several well-known restaurants pointed out the increasing difficulty in hiring Portuguese workers, especially for basic roles.
During the conversation with journalist Vítor Gonçalves, the chef stated that there is little availability on the part of the Portuguese to carry out tasks such as the kitchen, highlighting that many opt for other areas or simply show no interest in working in the sector.
Faced with this reality, Rui Paula revealed that he has resorted to hiring foreign workers, namely Nepalese, with whom he says he has a very positive experience. As he explained, many were already in Portugal and are learning the language, initially communicating in English.
Despite this, the chef made a point of highlighting the importance of guaranteeing decent conditions for all employees, regardless of their origin. He defended fair wages, respect and equal treatment within teams, stressing that everyone should be treated the same way.
The statements are generating reactions and once again launch discussion about the shortage of professionals in the restaurant industry, a problem that continues to affect the sector in Portugal.
