Does it make sense to prevent young people from being on social media and for the State to determine the restrictions?

The prohibition of access to social networks for children under 13 and the limitation of use between 13 and 16 years old are the themes of this week’s episode of “Essential”. As the Portuguese Parliament prepares new legislation, the debate on regulating young people’s access to the digital world is gaining prominence.

The Portuguese Parliament is preparing a new law that changes the rules for children and young people in the digital world.

This means that access to social networks, image and content sharing services, betting, games and applications between 13 and 16 years old will only be allowed with parental permission. Under 13 years of age, access will be prohibited.

These changes will cover platforms that are very popular among children and teenagers. Does it make sense to prevent young people from being on social media and for the State to determine the restrictions? What do people and their parents think?
