Roberto Mazzarella: mafia boss on the run for more than a year was arrested in a luxury villa on the Amalfi Coast

Mazarella, 48, is the leader of a Camorra clan, the Neapolitan mafia, and is accused of murder

Roberto Mazzarella, head of a Neapolitan mafia clan in Italy, accused of murder and on the run for more than a year, was arrested last night in the beach town of Vietri sul Mare, Italian police announced.

The 48-year-old head of the Mazzarella da Camorra clan, who was with his wife and two children, was located “in a luxurious mansion” on the Amalfi coast and did not offer any resistance.

Several patrol boats also participated in the arrest, positioning themselves off the coast. Footage of the arrest was released by the Carabinieri, showing heavily armed police entering the mansion.

According to Italian news agency Ansa, Mazzarella was living at the property under a false name. The police also found three luxury watches worth around 20,000 euros, some fake documents and cell phones at the resort.

Roberto Mazzarella, who was on the Ministry of the Interior’s list of the most dangerous fugitives, had been on the run since January 28, 2025, the day he escaped from prison on suspicion of qualified homicide, the police said.

He is accused of instigating the murder of Antonio Maione, killed in a revenge attack on September 15, 2000, in a delicatessen in San Giovanni a Teduccio, in eastern Naples.

In addition to the Carabinieri investigation unit, the “Cacciatori di Calabria” Squadron, the Neapolitan group of the Italian Air Force (API) and the Salerno Coast Guard boat, which monitored the surrounding waters, also participated in the operation.

The man is considered a powerful figure within the Camorra criminal group, which controls criminal activity in Naples and the neighboring province, and appears on the list of Italy’s most dangerous fugitives. He is the nephew of clan chiefs Ciro, Gennaro and Vincenzo. The Mazzarella clan is known to be involved in counterfeiting in Naples, considered the capital of counterfeit notes.

Last month, police detained 16 people close to the Mazzarella clan for cybercrime.
