Tablets will help astronauts identify features of the Moon

Sara Schmidt is the leader of the Artemis II Lunar Observations team — a role in which she helped develop special software that will guide the four astronauts in their search for various lunar features.

“This software package gives them a chronological view of their business,” she said.

Installed on tablets that the crew will use, it will be a crucial reference point to help them accurately identify impact craters and other topographic features.

‐The astronauts had to participate in classroom training… they started with the ones,” Schmidt told CNN.

From there, she said, “They’re a fantastic group. They’re a lot of fun to work with. The team has moved on to software and more integrated types of training… and the simulations they participate in kind of tie it all together.”

The lunar flyby mission officially began this Monday (6). The Artemis II crew will work in shifts to capture images of the Moon over the next six hours.
