Government, opposition, advertisers and Jewish entities pressure against show at the Wireless Festival after anti-Semitic speeches by the American rapper
The UK government is considering whether to allow the American rapper to enterin the country to participate in the in London. The artist was announced as the main attraction of the event, scheduled for July, but the performance generated controversy due to anti-Semitic statements made by him in recent years.
West, who today uses the name Ye, released the song in 2025 Heil Hitler and also sold t-shirts with swastikas on them. In January, he apologized in a video and attributed the episode to manic attacks associated with bipolar disorder.
According to British ministers analyze whether the artist’s presence would be compatible with the public interest. Under the country’s legislation, the government may prevent the entry of foreigners when it considers that their presence is not “beneficial to the public good”.
The country’s prime minister (Labor Party) classified as “deeply worrying” the possibility of the rapper being the main attraction of the festival. His opponent Chris Philp (Conservative Party) says that the artist’s statements offend the Jewish community. He advocates that the visa be denied.
British Jewish organizations are also pushing for measures. The executive director of Michael Weiger, also criticized the festival organizers and the company Festival Republic for keeping the show going.
The event will take place at Finsbury Park between July 10th and 12th, with an estimated audience of around 50 thousand people per day. Tickets should go on sale this week.
The controversy also affected the festival’s funding. Brands like Rockstar Energy, PepsiCo, Diageo e PayPal announced that they will not associate their brands with the event.
In 2025, a Kanye West concert in São Paulo was canceled after the city hall revoked the authorization for the use of the Interlagos Race Track. The justification was also the rapper’s statements.
