How to read the electricity meter correctly?
Modern electricity meters are often small information centers. In addition to the main consumption reading, they can also display data such as the current load (active power), network voltage, or even consumption history from the last few days. Reading the user manual for your meter will allow you to use these additional functions to even better manage energy in your home. After all, correct and regular reading of the electricity meter is not only the basis for settlements with the electricity supplier. It is also a valuable tool for monitoring your own energy consumption. Thanks to this, you can consciously manage your household budget, identify devices that consume the most electricity, and even quickly detect potential failures or installation irregularities that could lead to increased bills. If you have a dual zone tariff (e.g. G12), your meter will display two separate readings: one for the day zone (e.g. T1, I, Day) and one for the night/weekend zone (e.g. T2, II, Night). Make sure you read both values by switching the meter display using the appropriate button. Sometimes it happens that an unusual message appears on the meter and we do not know what it means.

Of course, it is worth bearing in mind that an electricity meter is a device that may be damaged. Then, unknown messages or even false energy consumption will appear on it, which will translate into an increase in our costs. What messages should alarm us and encourage us to contact the power plant as soon as possible?
- “Error”, “Err”, “Error”: A numeric code (e.g. Err 01, Err 10) often appears, which indicates an internal fault in the meter’s electronics.
- “Call”, “call for help”: The meter informs about a permanent failure that prevents further correct measurements and requires a visit from a technician.
- „Battery”, “One”: Indicates low voltage of the meter memory battery, which may lead to loss of consumption data.
- Blank display: The lack of any indications and the simultaneous lack of electricity in the house indicates that the meter is damaged.
If the error message appears after a storm, strong winds or other weather anomalies, it is possible that the problem is temporary and related to network congestion. In such situations, it is often worth waiting several hours or even until the next day before contacting the supplier. However, if the error persists and you also notice irregularities in the power supply (e.g. flashing lights, lack of power in some parts of the house), it is necessary to report it immediately.

In addition to the above-mentioned messages, which directly indicate to the user a problem with the device, there is another fault which, unfortunately, may go unnoticed by the user for a long time and will cost a lot. This is a situation in which neither the residents’ habits nor the devices have changed. Then the counter may overestimate the measurement. How to check it? First, turn off all electrical appliances, or preferably disconnect them from the sockets, to eliminate energy consumption in standby mode. Then you need to keep an eye on the meter – if the readings keep changing, it may be an error.
