The beautiful Nikola Weiterová, daughter of the legendary repéták Otto Weiter, became a mother on September 3. She gave birth to a little girl to her partner George, who was given an unconventional name – Nova. Only those closest to her knew about this beautiful stage in her life. “I’ve been waiting for this moment for what seems like a lifetime – almost 35 years to be honest. Keeping you as my most precious secret and protecting you was my heart’s greatest journey“, she dedicated touching words to her newborn daughter.
Nikola has been living in the USA for more than ten years. In February 2024, she managed to obtain American citizenship. It was not easy at all. “It took almost 9 years. It required excellent credit, paid taxes, bought a property, got an education and degree, opened two businesses, thousands of dollars spent on lawyers and countless meetings with immigration, arranging insurances, and not even one parking ticket would help me. But I did it! All by myself!” she wrote on the social network at the time.
Although many people think that behind a big puddle everyone has a carefree life, the opposite is true. On the social network, Nikola gave her followers the opportunity to ask her questions. One of the fans was interested in the length of maternity leave in the US, or what kind of support is intended for mother and child.
Nikola revealed the cruel truth. “Are you holding on? You’d better sit down.” Maternal zero, support zero. They will ‘hold’ your place at work for six weeks. Of course, no salary or maternity leave, nothing. I do not qualify for support as I am not a ‘welfare case’,” she revealed who actually receives state aid in the US.
Behind the big puddle, Nikola works as a veterinarian, she also makes jewelry. “Of course, I personally will not return to work after six weeks. I’m lucky enough to be open to vets anytime because I’m licensed and educated, plus I’m respected at work. Well, I want to raise my child, so they won’t see me there soon,” she said honestly. Maternity leave in Slovakia normally lasts 34 weeks (37 weeks for single mothers, 43 weeks for twins). The claim arises from the sickness insurance if it lasted at least 270 days in the last two years before the birth. The allowance represents approximately 75% of the gross salary.
After the end of maternity leave, the parent goes on parental leave and receives parental allowance. This is a social benefit that the state contributes to an eligible person (only one of the parents) to ensure proper care for a child up to three years of age (or six years, if the child has a long-term adverse health condition).
