Leader of the opposition PS Michal Šimečka criticizes Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) for Wednesday’s comments at Bratislava’s Slavínwhich according to him question the clear anchoring of Slovakia in Europe. He invites him to a discussion about where Slovakia belongs. This follows from a statement sent to TASR by Alec Borový from the PS media department.
Šimečka pointed to the speech of the Prime Minister in Slavín, in which, according to him, he tried talk about peace and at the same time indicated that he does not know where Slovakia belongs. According to the PS, this is a dangerous blurring of the real intentions of the prime minister, who it has been pulling the country to the east for a long time and questioning its clear anchoring in Europe.
“Robert Fico has no moral right to appropriate the word peace today. It is his two allies and friends, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, who unleashed the biggest conflicts of recent times. It seems all the more absurd when he is now playing a person who wants to talk about peace,” declared Šimečka.
He finds it extremely disturbing that the prime minister is publicly fumbling with the question of where Slovakia belongs and where its security anchorage is. “Actually, I think that Robert Fico knows very well where he wants to take Slovakia. That direction is the east, Putin’s Russia. However, today he pretends that he wants to let the voters decide.
That’s why I want to address a clear challenge to him – let him not hide and come to discuss with me where Slovakia belongs – whether to the east to Russia or to a strong and united Europe,” said the PS leader.
Fico marked the 81st anniversary of the liberation of Bratislava in Slavín on Wednesday international law trampled. He thinks that a new world order is being created and Slovakia must find its way in it. According to him, the citizens themselves must decide on the security of Slovakia.
“If I am the prime minister of the Slovak Republic and this question comes up, we will turn to you with this question and we will rely on your common sense,” he declared. At the same time, he stated that Slovakia is “hungry for peace”.
