Gilmarpalooza will have Nobel Prize in Economics and Thomas Friedman

It will feature international experts to discuss the impacts of technological transformation and global geopolitical reorganization. Among the main names announced are the economist , 79 years old, winner of the , and the journalist Thomas Friedman, 72 years old, columnist for the newspaper The New York Times and winner of 3 Pulitzer Prizes.

Gilmarpalooza, as the annual event in Portugal became known (a play on the name of the music festival ), is scheduled for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd of June 2026. This year’s edition will have the theme “New international order, technology and sovereignty: democratic, economic and social challenges”.

Professor at Northwestern University, in Illinois (USA), Mokyr is a reference in the study of the origins of the Industrial Revolution and the relationship between knowledge, technology and economic growth.

Author of books on globalization and technology, such as “The World Is Flat”Friedman has already participated in the Lisbon Forum in 2024. On that occasion, the journalist discussed the possibility of Donald Trump (Republican Party) winning the North American presidential elections.

Minister Gilmar Mendes, of the Federal Supreme Court, and Angelika Nussberger, director of the Institute of Eastern European Law and Comparative Law at the University of Cologne, in Germany, are also confirmed.

PARTIES AND PRIVATE DINNERS

The lectures at the meeting will be at the Faculty of Law of . During the days they spend in Portugal, representatives of private companies take the opportunity to offer private parties and dinners for participants – an opportunity that businesspeople have to get closer to legal operators who work in the Judiciary. This type of contact is criticized by those who consider such meetings inappropriate.

Gilmar Mendes differently. The Dean of the STF believes that meetings such as the Forum Paulista allow members of the Judiciary to reflect on relevant contemporary issues, exchange experiences with each other and thus be better prepared for the exercise of the judiciary.

O IDP is a private higher education company founded in 1998, in Brasília, by Gilmar Mendes – at the time, it had 2 other partners: Inocêncio Mártires Coelho (who was Attorney General of the Republic from 1981 to 1985) and Paulo Gonet Branco, who is the current Attorney General of the Republic. Both Inocêncio and Paulo Gonet left society.

In an interview in May 2025, Mendes was asked whether there was a conflict of interest between his work as a judge and the activity of the IDP, which has contracts with the Brazilian Football Confederation to provide courses. and judge cases related to the CBF. “I am a member of the IDP and, at a given historical moment, the IDP accepted a proposal from the CBF to carry out the courses that the CBF Academy offered. It was just a private law contract directed by the IDP management.”
