Government will release R$7 billion from FGTS, says Luiz Marinho

The Minister of Labor, said that the government will release the withdrawal of R$7 billion from the FGTS to around 10 million workers. The initiative is part of a package of actions by the Executive to reduce .

In an interview with the newspaper The Globereleased this Thursday (April 9, 2026), the minister stated that the amount complements the release of FGTS to workers who opted for the birthday withdrawal, were fired and had part of the resources blocked as loan guarantee.

“We are looking at the size of the debt problem of society in general and studying how to organize this process with financial institutions. The idea is to carry out a renegotiation process, so that, with the participation of institutions, it is possible to drastically reduce the value of installments and help manage this process. The FGTS is being considered a small part in relation to the set of measures under discussion”these.

Another measure studied by the ministry is the regulation of the use of FGTS as a guarantee for payroll loans. The minister argues that workers can use the portion of the fund allowed for this purpose.

Currently, it is only permitted to use a fine of 40% of the FGTS balance, in cases of unfair dismissal, as a guarantee for the payroll. With the change proposed by the government, the worker will be able to use the entire amount of the fine as collateral and obtain lower interest rates.

According to the minister, the interest rate is the main factor responsible for the indebtedness of Brazilian families.

“The war causes global imbalances and impacts. But the high interest rate is mainly responsible for the budget imbalance of people and families. Furthermore, the president has said that people’s lives have changed. With technology, many end up adopting habits that generate expenses. We have bets, which are another problem. Let’s evaluate how to deal with this”these.
