The president of the Superior Electoral Court, Cármen Lúcia, announced that she will anticipate her departure from the Court during an ordinary session this Thursday (April 9, 2026). The symbolic vote for the next biennium will be on April 14, next Tuesday, with the appointment of minister Kassio Nunes Marques as the new president of the Court.
According to the minister, the decision was justified by the election year. “I have always thought that a change in the ownership of the presidency close to the elections could compromise the administrative tranquility that should prevail over the elections. The new ones have to build their teams”he stated.
For Cármen, it is necessary to give more time for the new management to appoint its administrative team. The minister said that “has no attachment to the position” and that “will continue with his duties at the STF“. He mentioned that he would have until June 3 to continue as president.
The minister stated that, if it remained until the end of the administration, the presidency of Kassio Nunes Marques would have just over 100 days to follow the 2026 general elections, which will have the 1st round on October 4th. Cármen Lúcia said that “collegiality must be imposed on collegiate bodies”.
