Israel has killed more journalists and media professionals than any war

The Israel Defense Force (IDFin its acronym in English) tomurdered three journalists in one dayone in the Gaza Strip and two in Lebanon. Therefore, the number of journalists reaches seven killed by Israeli bombings in Lebanon since March 2, generating criticism from entities representing journalists.

The Lebanese journalist Ghada Daikhfrom Radio Sawt Al-Farah (Voice of Joy), was murdered in Tyre, in southern Lebanon. Another journalist killed on the same day was Suzan Al-Khalilby TV reporter Al-Manar.

In Gaza, Israel murdered the journalist Muhammad Washahfrom the Arabic broadcaster Al-Jazeera, which is based in Qatar. In this case, the IDF issued statement assuming responsibility for the attack on the journalist.

“Washah operated under the guise of an Al Jazeera journalist, exploiting this identity to promote terrorist activities against the Israel Defense Forces and the State of Israel,” the Israeli Army said.

The broadcaster Al-Jazeera classified the act as a “heinous crime” and refuted the accusation that Washah was from Hamas, remembering that the professional had worked for the company since 2018.

“This constitutes a new and flagrant violation of all international laws and norms and reflects an ongoing systematic policy of persecuting journalists and silencing the voice of truth. It is a deliberate and targeted crime, intended to intimidate journalists and prevent them from carrying out their professional duties,” said a statement from Qatar TV.

Washah was killed after a drone hit the car he was traveling in west of Gaza cityaccording to the broadcaster. With this, it comes to 262 the number of journalists murdered in Gaza since October 7, 2023.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), based in New York, United States (USA), condemned the three murders against press professionals committed by Israel.

“The murder of journalists in Gaza and Lebanon today is not incidental – it is part of a broader attack on press freedom. The international community must act now to stop it,” says a CPJ statement.

Israel has killed more journalists and media professionals than any war in world history. There are more deaths than the sum of seven other important conflicts: the 1st and 2nd world wars, the American Civil War, the Syrian War, Vietnam (including the conflicts in Cambodia and Laos), in addition to the wars in Yugoslavia and Ukraine.
