The PL, the former president’s party, plans to elect 115 federal deputies in 2026 and surpass the record of the largest group since redemocratization. The estimate was made by the president of the party, , and sent to the Poder360.
According to him, the calculation takes into account the current composition of the bench after the party window, a period in which deputies can change parties without risk of losing their mandate. Today, the party has 95 congressmen in the Chamber.
If confirmed, the mark would surpass the PFL’s performance in 1998, when the party elected 105 deputies – the highest result since the 1988 Constitution.
“We will break the PFL’s 1998 record. And we will provide robust support to the government of ”, said Valdemar, citing the senator’s (PL-RJ) pre-campaign for the Presidency.
Here are the largest benches elected since 1988:
- 1998 – PFL elected 105 deputies;
- 2022 – PL elected 99 deputies;
- 2010 – PT elected 88 deputies.
Currently, the PL holds the largest bench in the Chamber. In 2022, the party elected 99 deputies. The 2nd largest group was that of the federation formed by PT, PC do B and PV, with 81 deputies.
The size of the bench has a direct impact on access to public resources. The division of the party fund considers, among other criteria, the electoral performance of the parties for the Chamber. With the 99 deputies elected in 2022, the PL receives around R$220 million per year.
If it reaches 115 seats, this value could approach R$260 million annually. The figures vary depending on the amount approved in the Budget and the proportional distribution based on the votes obtained by the parties.
