Hungarians go to the polls on Sunday (12) to choose 199 deputies in the National Assembly which will subsequently elect the prime minister. Or nationalist Viktor Orbánally of both Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, has held the position for 16 years and has a real chance of being defeated. The center-right party Tisza, led by Peter Magyar, leads the polls.

However, according to the agency Reutersthere are a large number of undecided voters and a high proportion of ethnic Hungarians in neighboring countries who, for the most part, support the ruling Fidesz party.

The scenario of economic stagnation, rising cost of living and enrichment of oligarchs close to the government compromised Orbán’s image with voters.

Magyar, 45, promises to fight corruption, release billions of euros of frozen European Union funds, tax the richest and reform the Hungarian healthcare system. He also intends distance Hungary from Russia and prevent your country from becoming a “Russian puppet”.

Sunday’s election is considered very important for the country with 9.6 million inhabitants, in addition to awakening attention from all over Europe.

“Russia considers Hungary as a important interlocutor within the European Unionmaintaining energetic ties and adopting by far the toughest tone towards Ukraine of any other EU country. In the United States, Hungary has attracted attention as a laboratory of sovereignist politics,” explained Gregoire Roos, director of the Europe, Russia, and Eurasia Programs at Chataham House, to Reuters.
