Eurico Castro Alves
IGAS considers the 178 thousand euros that Eurico Castro Alves received, between 2021 and 2025, as coordinator of the team that performed surgeries outside normal working hours to be irregular. Doctor says there is nothing illegal.
Eurico Castro Alvesdirector of Surgery at the Santo António Local Health Unit (ULSSA) in Porto, received, from 2021 to 2025, what describes him as “commission” for surgeries performed by doctors he coordinated.
“There is nothing illegal. Everything was done based on the law”the doctor assures the CM, also stating that he is waiting “for the final decision”, hoping that “there will be a fair and non-contradictory assessment”.
At issue are surgeries carried out outside normal working hours, between 2021 and 2025, within the scope of the Integrated Surgery Registration Management System (SIGIC).
As coordinator of the unit responsible for additional production – Hospital Unit for Management of Registration for Surgery (UHGIC) -, Eurico Castro Alves won 178,822 euros – corresponding to 0.4% of the total value.
However, according to the same newspaper, the General Inspection of Health Activities concluded, in a preliminary inspection report, that the payment is “irregular”by “absence from working hours” and violating SIGIC legal rulesand therefore there may be replenishment of funds.
The inspection began in 2025, following an anonymous complaint.
In his defense, says the morning newspaper, Castro Alves claimed that he was covered for one working hours exemption regimewhich, in ULSSA’s opinion, “exempts you from marking the point”.
