The majority of Brazilians are in favor of former president Jair Bolsonaro remaining under house arrestaccording to Datafolha research released this Sunday (12).
The survey shows that 59% of those interviewed defend the current regime, while 37% think he should serve his sentence in prison; 5% did not know how to answer.
A Most center voters and Bolsonaro supporters also support Bolsonaro being kept under house arrest. The preference rate for the current regime is high even among those who declare themselves PT members.
Among those who declare themselves to be centrist voters, 53% think that Bolsonaro should remain under house arrest, 41% are in favor of him returning to the closed regime and 6% do not know how to answer the question.
The approval rate for house arrest is almost absolute among Bolsonaro supporters: 94% support him serving his sentence at home and only 3% think he should return to prison; another 2% were unable to answer.
For the majority of PT voters, however, Bolsonaro should remain in a closed regime: 68% believe he should return to prison, 28% advocate that he serve his sentence at home and 4% were unable to answer.
The survey was carried out with 2,004 people in 134 cities between last Tuesday and Thursday (7 and 9).
Bolsonaro was unanimously sentenced by the STF (Supreme Federal Court) to 27 years and three months in prison for planning a coup d’état after losing the 2022 elections.
