Court holds symbolic vote after minister Cármen Lúcia announces her departure from office after two years
The Superior Electoral Court (TSE) will hold this Tuesday (14), at 7pm, a symbolic vote to elect the minister Nunes Marques for or charge of President of the Electoral Court.
Currently, Marques is the vice-president of the court and will take command of the TSE after the end of the current president’s termminister Cármen Lúcia, who will complete a period of two years at the head of the court at the end of May. THE vice-president will be minister André Mendonça.
The inauguration date has not yet been defined.
The vote will be symbolic because the choice of the court’s command is made by seniority among ministers which also make up the Federal Supreme Court (STF).
Given the approaching election period, Minister Cármen Lúcia decided to bring forward her departure from the court to allow the management transition to begin.
Upon leaving the presidency of the TSE, the minister could continue working at the Court until August. However, she has already signaled that intends to leave the court to dedicate himself exclusively to activities at the Supreme Court.
In this way, the minister Dias Toffoli will take up a permanent position at the TSE.
Profile
Born in Teresina (PI), Kassio Nunes Marques has 53 years and was nominated to the Supreme Court, in 2020, by former president Jair Bolsonaro to fill the vacancy left by retired minister Celso de Mello. Before arriving at the Supreme Court, he served as judge of the Federal Regional Court (TRF) of the 1st Region, based in Brasília. He was a lawyer for about 15 years e judge of the Regional Electoral Court (TRE) from Piauí.
Composition
The TSE is made up of seven ministersbeing three from the STF, two from the Superior Court of Justice (STJ) and two lawyers appointed by the President of the Republicin addition to their respective substitutes.
With the change of command, the composition of the court will be as follows after Cármen Lúcia leaves the court:
- STF Chairs: Nunes Marques, André Mendonça and Dias Toffoli;
- STJ Chairs: Antonio Carlos Ferreira and Ricardo Villas Bôas Cueva;
- Jurists’ chairs: Floriano de Azevedo Marques and Estela Aranha.
