At the center of controversy due to a report requesting the indictment of ministers of the STF (Supreme Federal Court), the senator (-SE) was the author of the request that gave rise to the (Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry), of which he is also the rapporteur.
In an interview with TV Cultura’s Roda Viva program at the beginning of the month, the parliamentarian was asked about his political position during the last two presidential votes. According to Vieira, in the first round of 2018, he voted for (). In the second round, he declared his vote in , on that date he was a member of .
Vieira, 51, justified the choice as a strategy to “break the PT cycle”. The senator admits to having regretted his choice “two months after” Bolsonaro’s inauguration. In 2022, Vieira declared his vote in (). According to the congressman, the main criterion for change was “democratic respect”.
For this year, the senator stated that he will work for a third way in the first round, avoiding anticipating support for a possible second round between the same political groups.
Alessandro Vieira has a law degree from Unit (Tiradentes University). Before entering politics, he worked for more than 20 years as a Civil Police delegate in Sergipe.
His career in public security included commanding the DHPP (Department of Homicide and Personal Protection) and directing the General Coordination of Forensics. Between 2016 and 2017, he held the position of general delegate of the Civil Police of Sergipe. In 2018, he ran for and was elected with 474 thousand votes. That was the first electoral contest of his career.
After being elected by the Network, he went through the former PPS (Popular Socialist Party)—which changed its name to Cidadania in 2019—and migrated to the PSDB in March 2022.
He ran for state government that year, but only came in third place, with 10.9% of the valid votes. In June 2023, he joined the MDB, his current party.
PARLIAMENTARY ACTION AND VOTES
At the beginning of his career in the Legislature, Vieira took an initiative that targeted Supreme Court ministers. He was the author of the request to install, in 2019, magistrates of the court and higher courts. At the time, the proposal was nicknamed “Lava Toga”.
The CPI, however, did not get off the ground. Senator Davi Alcolumbre (União Brasil-AP), who presided over the House at the time and returned to the position last year, was against opening the commission.
In his first year in the Senate, the senator from Sergipe voted to transform the Financial Activities Control Council (Coaf) into a Financial Intelligence Unit (MPV 893/2019).
In the social field, in 2020, it reported the expansion of Emergency Aid, extending the benefit to 70 million people during the pandemic. In the same year, he was the author of PL 2630/2020, known as a, which establishes the regulation of social networks.
Vieira also reported on PEC 3/2021, the so-called “PEC da Blindagem”. The text, which sought to make investigations against parliamentarians more difficult, was submitted to the Senate (Constitution and Justice Committee) last September.
In February 2025, Vieira filed the request to create the Organized Crime CPI (RQS 470/2025). In the document, he defended the urgency of mapping the financial intelligence and command structures of factions and militias in Brazil.
