focused on having a good game, he said he was satisfied with his performance
A victory with the taste of revenge. On Tuesday morning, João Fonseca broke the taboo and beat Chilean Alejandro Tabilo for the first time since turning professional. With two defeats in two clashes, the Brazilian commented on the triumph and the good debut at the ATP 500 in Munich.
“I knew it would be a difficult game. I lost to him (Tabilo) twice. He’s a great opponent and he knows how to play well at altitude. I’m happy to play here and to have advanced”, said the 19-year-old young man from Rio.
In addition to surpassing the quality of its Chilean rival, Fonseca saw the weather as another adversity to be overcome. Focused on having a good game, he said he was satisfied with his performance.
“I felt good today, even though it was quite cold. Last week I was playing in the sun (in Monte Carlo). It was a different climate, it’s altitude here (in Munich). My hands were freezing at half-time. But overall I did well. I had two or three days to adapt, but I think that’s about it. In the end, whoever adapts best wins”, he declared.
After overcoming the natural anxiety of a debut, Fonseca will face Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech (27th), who defeated the American Alex Michelsen (35th) by 2 sets to 0.
In Monte Carlo, last week, João beat Rinderknech 2-1. The match, valid for the round of 16, is scheduled for this Wednesday, with no set time yet.
