Magyar demands Hungarian president’s departure after victory

During a meeting with Tamás Sulyok, Tisza leader asked that a new National Assembly meet on May 4

The leader of the Hungarian opposition, (Tisza, center right), met with the president this Wednesday (April 15, 2026). The meeting comes three days after the electoral victory of the Tisza party in Parliament, which ended 16 years of (Fidesz, right) in government.

During the negotiations, Magyar demanded Sulyok’s departure from the presidential post. He told journalists that he also requested that the first session of the new National Assembly be held on May 4, the date scheduled for the release of the official election results. On his official profile on X, the opposition leader affirmed que Sulyok “is unworthy of representing the unity of the Hungarian nation”. He stated that the president “not fit to serve as a moral authority or role model”. Magyar demands the president’s departure as soon as the new government takes office.

According to BBCthe Tisza leader stated that the election of the new government will likely take place on May 6 or 7. Magyar wants the process to be carried out sooner.
