Envoys from ministries and Itamaraty provide clarifications to the United States Trade Representative in an investigation based on Section 301
Representatives of the Brazilian government will meet this Thursday (April 16, 2026) with officials from the USTR (Office of the United States Trade Representative), in Washington, to provide clarifications on the commercial investigation opened based on Section 301 of the US Trade Law — which deals with practices considered restrictive to North American trade, including Pix and commerce on Rua 25 de Março.
According to the Poder360 together with parties involved in the negotiation, the meeting began on Wednesday (April 15). The main objective is for the Brazilian delegation to participate in the conversations to provide technical and legal explanations that contribute to the investigation, opened on July 15, 2025.
Among those sent are representatives from Mdic (Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services), MAPA (Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock), the Ministry of Justice and Itamaraty. There are no expectations of announcements at the end of the meeting.
SECTION 301
They harm the competitiveness of North American companies. The analysis focuses on two main sectors: digital payments and e-commerce.
According to the official document, “Brazil appears to engage in several unfair practices related to electronic payment services, including, but not limited to, favoring its government-developed electronic payment services.”
The investigation covers several areas, such as e-commerce, technology, import tariffs and deforestation. The process also addresses issues related to the protection of intellectual property in Brazil. The USTR may recommend further action depending on the findings of the investigation. Options include trade sanctions or bilateral negotiations between Brazil and the United States.
