The release of former deputy Alexandre Ramagem in the United States surprised Brazilian authorities, who have not yet received official communication about the decision. The Federal Police are awaiting clarification on the reasons that led to the release, which took place on Wednesday (16). The information is from G1.
Ramagem had been detained on Monday (13), in Orlando, Florida, for immigration-related issues. He was taken to a detention center, where he remained in a separate cell. Two days later, his name was no longer in the prison system’s records or in the American immigration service’s database.
According to findings released by GloboNewsthe release occurred at 2:52 pm local time. The Brazilian government’s expectation was to keep the former parliamentarian in custody while negotiations were underway for his eventual deportation to Brazil.
Sentenced to 16 years in prison as part of investigations into the 2022 coup plot, Ramagem is considered a fugitive by Brazilian justice. The Federal Supreme Court pointed out that he used the structure of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency to try to facilitate actions that would keep former president Jair Bolsonaro in power.
Before his release, Brazilian authorities prepared a dossier with information about Ramagem’s legal situation and his irregular entry into the United States. The material would be handed over to Enforcement and Removal Operations, the sector responsible for deportation actions, to speed up the process and prevent its release.
The document also includes details about the former deputy’s departure from Brazil. According to the Federal Police, he left the country via Roraima in September last year, crossed the border with Guyana by land and continued to Georgetown, from where he embarked for the United States. Investigators point out that the operation had the support of a criminal organization linked to illegal mining.

The Brazilian government’s strategy also involves contesting a possible request for political asylum made by Ramagem. The intention is to reinforce cooperation with American authorities to facilitate the former parliamentarian’s return to the country.
A meeting between representatives of the Federal Police and the United States immigration service was scheduled for this Thursday (16), but, after his release, there is still no confirmation on whether the meeting will take place.
