Ruy de Carvalho honored with Vote of Salute in the Legislative Assembly
Actor was honored at the Legislative Assembly: “Esteem culture”. It is necessary to cherish and love democracy.
At 99 years old, Ruy de Carvalho he was honored in the Legislative Assembly, in a greeting vote (approved unanimously), which highlights the actor’s career and contribution to national culture.
The ceremony took place this Wednesday, with the presence of other actors, several deputies and Aguiar-Branco. The President of the Assembly recalled that it is not usual in Parliament to have a greeting vote for someone who is 99 years old.
“But there are many things in Ruy de Carvalho’s career that are unusual. exceptional”, highlighted Aguiar-Branco.
After the ceremony, in conversation with journalists, the actor admitted that he was “very excited” with a tribute that he really liked.
Repeat the sentence: “We love culture” – but it is also necessary to “esteem and love the freedom ea democracy, which are the most beautiful things a man can have.”
“But it is necessary to know how to use freedom and democracy. No demagoguery, no debauchery. Much respect for each other”, he pointed out.
In between, his daughter, Paula de Carvalho, read a speech written by her father. And he left serious warnings: “I remember very well (but I would prefer not to remember) the day the World War II. Unfortunately, we are living in very similar times – or perhaps worse – with even more dictators than we should. I would really like to ask you that this doesn’t happen again.”
Ruy de Carvalho will return to the stage next week, on April 22nd. It will be at the Coliseu do Porto, with the play A Ratoeira, directed by Paulo Sousa Costa.
