CNBB Commission criticizes ‘unrestricted pejotization’ – 04/16/2026 – Panel

A commission from the CNBB (National Conference of Brazilian Bishops) issued a technical note in which it asks the church to mobilize around the issue, demanding speed in the trial taking place at the (Supreme Federal Court).

The CNBB Episcopal Sociotransformative Commission states that pejotization is a subtractive and that, if it is adopted as a new work model, there will be fewer resources to pay for Brazilians’ retirement.

In the internal note released to the archbishops and bishops of Brazil, the commission says that there would be a profound rupture in the labor social protection model, with worsening income concentration and with the bill falling on the most vulnerable.

Positioning is done. The matter is reported by the minister and the tendency is for this contracting route to remain legal.

In the note, the commission demands that civil society monitor the STF trial more closely and asks that the court take the matter to trial soon.

“The unjustified delay in assessing the matter contributes to the progressive consolidation of practices that, once disseminated, could become extremely difficult to reverse”, he states.

The commission also says that the Supreme Court may make it impossible, in practice, to recognize the employment relationship even when the requirements of the employment relationship are met.

The matter will be on the agenda of the 62nd CNBB Assembly, which will take place until April 24th, in São Paulo. The conference can decide to take a position on the topic. This is the expectation of bishops on the committee that formulated the technical note.
