Young population falls and number of elderly people increases in Brazil, points out IBGE

A young Brazilian populationwhich represents people under 30 years of age, fell from 49.9% to 41.4%, between the years 2012 to 2025. In absolute terms, the group suffered a reduction of more than 10 million people, going from 98.2 million to 88.0 million in the period. In contrast, the number of elderly people in Brazil increased, rising from 11.3% to 16.6% in the same time frame.

The data comes from the PNAD survey (National Household Sample Survey), by IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), released this Friday morning (17).

The highlight of the reduction in the group of young people was the age group between 0 and 13 years old, which fell from 22.0% to 18.1% of the resident population. The number of teenagers and young people, between 14 and 19 years old, also fell, from 10.5% to 8.3%.

Population aging

The samples show a trend towards population aging in the country. Among the group, there is still a female predominance. “The sex ratio calculated for the population aged 65 and over indicated that there are approximately 75.9 men for every 100 women”, the research points out.

However, it was not just the number of elderly people that grew. The population aged 30 to 59 also increased, reaching 58.6% of the total inhabitants in 2025, a number that surpassed the 50.1% recorded in 2012.

Thus, the age group from 30 to 60 years old occupies the largest age group in the country.

Where are the young and old

Aging does not occur uniformly in Brazil. The North region remains the youngest in the country, with 41.5% of the population made up of young people aged up to 24.

On the other hand, the Southeast and South regions have the highest concentrations of elderly people with 18.1% of the population in both regions. The lowest amount found was in the North Region, with 11.3%.
