Bodies of 50 babies discovered in mass grave in Trinidad and Tobago

The bodies of at least 50 babies and six adults were discovered in a mass grave in a Trinidad and Tobago cemetery, police announced on Saturday.

Authorities opened an investigation after 56 bodies were discovered, including the remains of 50 babiesin a cemetery in small English-speaking archipelago located off the coast of Venezuela.

The six adults are four men and two women.

“Scientific police technicians were immediately sent to carry out a detailed forensic examination at the scene” and “additional medico-legal analyzes are being carried out to determine the origin” of the bodies.

“The nature of this discovery is deeply concerning and we understand the emotional impact it will have on families and the entire nation,” police added, appealing for witnesses.

The archipelago is in state of emergency since July 2025 due to violence.

Since 2021, the country has declared a state of emergency four times. Despite the reduction in crime, it continues to be a center for drug trafficking, according to experts.

A US State Department report from March 2025 projects a homicide rate of 37 per 100,000 inhabitantsmaking Trinidad e Tobago a sixth most dangerous nation in the world in 2023.
