A Jordanian fan died and eight others were injured this Tuesday (23) after a riot at the Roman Theater in Amman.

Thousands of people gathered there to watch the country’s team play against Algeria in the World Cup, local authorities announced.

A spokesman for the Public Security Directorate said that “nine people were taken to hospital in the early hours of Tuesday after being injured in a stampede in Hashemite Square”, near the theater where big screens had been installed to broadcast World Cup matches.

The official added that “one of the injured people died shortly after arriving at the emergency room” and was referred to the medical examiner’s office to determine the exact cause of death. The rest received care, and their health status ranges from stable to moderate.

A hospital source reported that the victim, a Jordan national team fan, was around 20 years old.

Thousands of Jordanians gathered on Monday night to watch the team’s second match at the historic theater, which has a capacity for up to 6,000 people. However, according to a ministerial source, there were more than 15 thousand fans at the venue.

In the sporting sphere, the game played in Santa Clara (California), in the second round of Group J of the World Cup, started with Jordan winning 1-0, but ended with Algeria winning 2-1.

In their debut, last week, the Jordanian team had already been defeated by Austria 3-1 and is therefore eliminated from the tournament.
