The party’s state directory also stated that holding direct elections is more appropriate for the state government
The state directory of the Workers’ Party of Rio unanimously approved this Saturday (April 18, 2026) support for the pre-candidacy of the former mayor of Rio (PSD) to the State government. The information was released on the social media of the state arm of the party.
In the publication, the party’s state directory in Rio de Janeiro stated that it discussed the elections for the buffer mandate in the State and defined that holding direct elections is “the most suitable alternative”.
The Guanabara Palace has been occupied since March 24, on an interim basis, by the president of the TJ-RJ (Court of Justice of Rio de Janeiro), Ricardo Couto de Castro. Couto’s management would initially be temporary, but the STF suspended the judgment on the buffer mandate and kept the interim man in office until further decision.
According to the Rio PT, supporting the holding of direct elections is “ensure popular participation and full respect for democratic principles”.

The PT state directory also confirmed the deputy’s nomination (PT-RJ) for the Senate on the Paes ticket. The PT leader in the Rio de Janeiro City Council, and pastor and singer Kleber Lucas were chosen as substitutes.
(PT-RJ), mayor of Maricá and national vice-president of the party, however, declared on Saturday night (April 18, 2026) that it was “surprised” with the requirement of a new name for the role of 1st substitute. It was not disclosed who nominated or who was nominated for the position.
Quaquá declared that his group’s support for the candidacy was conditioned by the appointment of substitutes. He said he did not agree with the nomination and that the 2 names announced for the positions were approved at a board meeting.
To the Poder360Quaquá declared that there will be a state meeting of the party on May 23rd in which the substitutes will be chosen. He stated that he will “majority to define the ticket” with Felipe Pires and Kleber Lucas.
