RJ approves law against abuse of women on public transport

Rio de Janeiro approved a new law to prevent abuse of women on public transport. The decree was published in the state’s Official Gazette on Friday (17).

According to the law, Detro-RJ (Road Transport Department of the State of Rio de Janeiro) should provide a channel to guide and direct against women in road transport.

The State Policy for Preventing and Combating Abuse Against Women in Public Transport is authored by by deputy Lilian Behring (PCdoB-RJ). To Lei 11.160/26 was approved by Alerj (Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro) and sanctioned by the acting governor, judge Ricardo Couto.

According to Alerj, the norm will be applied exclusively to drivers public transport, app transport and taxi, and will prioritize assistance to the victim and the immediate activation of authorities.

Still according to the author of the project, the driver, like , must be responsible for ensuring the safety of the victimas well as taking the perpetrator of the crime to the authorities to report the incident.

“Even with the existence of guidance posters, many drivers do not know how to identify or how to proceed when faced with a report of abuse committed against women in public transport”, states Lilian Behring in a note published by Alerj.

Still according to the deputy, the rule should democratize for assistance and reports of abuse, in addition to standardize drivers’ conduct in these casesaiming to protect the physical and psychological integrity of passengers and the safety of all users.
