A country at war: The numbers of horror

With 79 children already expected to die from gun violence in 2026, the massacre of eight minors in Louisiana is reopening the debate about gun ownership in the US.

This carnage is not an isolated incident, but part of a bloody, dizzying statistic. According to official figures from the Gun Violence Archive, for the current year:

  • 119 mass attacks have occurred to date.
  • 117 people have lost their lives in these incidents.
  • 79 children are among the dead, an increase that shocks public opinion.
  • 458 people have been injured by gunfire.

The Gun Violence Archive defines a “mass shooting” as any incident where at least four people (besides the perpetrator) are injured or killed. Last year, the US ended the year with 407 such incidents, showing that the pace of violence remains unabated.

The Shreveport massacre: Eight child victims of their own relative

The latest attack occurred on Sunday, shortly after 6:00 a.m., at three separate residences in Shreveport. The attacker, who was reportedly a relative of the children, killed eight minors and injured at least two others before fleeing in a stolen vehicle.

“We know that some of the children were his direct descendants,” said police spokesman Christopher Bordelon, underscoring the family nature of the tragedy.

The pursuit and the end of the perpetrator

After his heinous act, the gunman proceeded to violently steal a vehicle (carjacking) to escape. A wild chase ensued that ended up in the neighboring parish of Bossier. According to information he was heading to the house of a friend from the army. There, the suspect was shot dead by police officers during the pursuit.

Louisiana State Police have already begun an investigation into the circumstances under which the officers used their weapons, and the names of the victims are expected to be released once families have been notified.
