Iran guarantees passage to Russia in Hormuz and strengthens alliance with Moscow

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, and his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, spoke by telephone this Monday, 20, and Tehran confirmed its willingness to guarantee the unimpeded passage of Russian vessels and cargo through the Strait of Hormuz, despite this weekend’s new blockade. Both sides also reaffirmed their commitment to bilateral cooperation.

Araghchi briefed Lavrov on Iran’s position regarding US ceasefire violations, including the blockade of Hormuz and the seizure of an Iranian container ship. “The illegal behavior of the US and the contradictory positions of its leaders are incompatible with the claim of diplomacy, and the Islamic Republic of Iran, while monitoring the behavior of the other party, will take the appropriate decision to protect its interests and national security,” Araghchi’s official Telegram account said.

The Iranian minister also expressed his gratitude for Russia’s willingness to continue consultations to strengthen regional stability and advance joint diplomatic initiatives.
