Senator says Brazil needs to get used to investigating anyone’s conduct, even ministers
Senator Alessandro Vieira (MDB-SE) stated that does not feel intimidated by the statements made by the Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF)Gilmar Mendes, after requesting an investigation from the PGR into alleged abuse of power by the parliamentarian.
“I maintain the same stance. What we did was report facts. Gilmar Mendes intimidated, (opted) for direct aggression with verbal insults so as not to advance in a process necessary for Brazil,” he said in an interview with Jovem Pan. “We are not condemning anyoneis suggesting indictment to find out if there are problems in the conduct of some Supreme Court ministers”, he added.
Vieira also commented on the possibility of an investigation for abuse of power. “Gilmar not only made offenses and threats, but also asked the PGR to prosecute me for abuse of authority. We have already taken the initiative to respond, showing that there is no abuse,” he said. According to the senator, he made his vote based on facts.
“It may or may not be approved, but it is not an abuse of authority,” said Vieira, who also informed that he does not feel pressured by the reactions coming from the Supreme Court and reinforced that he considers his actions part of an institutional duty. “It’s not intimidating, because we know that we are doing an important job for Brazil,” he stated.
