Statement was given after a meeting in the Oval Office of the White House with diplomats from the 2 countries
The President of the United States, (Republican Party), announced this Thursday (April 23, 2026) the extension of the ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel for 3 weeks. The statement was made after a meeting in the Oval Office of the White House with diplomats from both countries.
In his Truth Social profile, Trump as “historical” e “very productive”. The Republican said the US will work to help Lebanon protect itself from the extremist group Hezbollah and said he hopes to soon receive Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun.
To journalists, Trump declared that there was a great chance that peace between the two countries would be sealed this year. The meeting, initially scheduled for the State Department, was transferred to the White House at the request of the president himself so that he could actively participate in the negotiations.
Also participating in the meeting were the US Vice President, JD Vance, the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, and the US ambassadors to Israel, Mike Huckabee, and to Lebanon, Michel Issa.
After the meeting, Huckabee stated that the 2 nations want good coexistence and compared Hezbollah to a “naughty boy throwing stones at windows”. According to him, if the group stopped the attacks, neighbors could “really work together”.
The extension of the truce comes despite violations of the original 10-day ceasefire that began on April 16. Stability in Lebanon is considered by Iran to be a central condition for advancing a more comprehensive peace agreement involving the governments of Washington, Tel Aviv and Tehran.
