“The United States will work with Lebanon to help protect itself from (militant movement) Hezbollah. The Israel-Lebanon ceasefire will be extended by three weeks,” Trump said on the Truth Social platform after a meeting with the envoys of Israel and Lebanon.
At the same time, the American leader expects the Israeli and Lebanese leaders to meet with him in the coming weeks. “I look forward to welcoming Israeli Prime Minister (Benjamin) Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Awn in the near future,” he wrote in the post.
“I think there’s a good chance for peace. It should be easy,” stated Trump after the meeting. He then told reporters that Iran will have to limit funding to Hezbollah, Reuters writes.
Lebanon was drawn into the Middle East war on March 2 when Hezbollah began shelling Israel to avenge the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed on February 28 – the first day of US-Israeli airstrikes on Iran. The cease-fire between Israel and Lebanon has been in effect since April 16 and was originally supposed to expire on Sunday, according to the agreement.
